The Institution

The Mahdi Bagh Institution is a religious community which was founded by Maulana Malak Saheb and Maulana Badruddin Saheb in 1891.

The wonderful and successful experiment in community living, is at present led by the spiritual head, His Holiness Maulana Amiruddin Malak Saheb, who did his Master’s in Business Administration from Atlanta University, Georgia, and his Master’s in International Management from Arizona University, Pheonix, USA.  He worked with CitiBank in New York and 3M Company in Beirut and Madras, before giving up a brilliant career to take on the responsibility of the mission and guide his followers.

The spiritual leaders as well as most of the followers live in a walled commune-like property, popularly known as ‘Mahdi Bagh Colony’ in the city of Nagpur in Maharashtra State of India. Other major settlements of its followers are situated at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh and Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Besides, sizeable numbers of Atba-e-Malak Badar are based in Indian cities like Hyderabad and Pune. Members of the community are spread across the globe with many of them in the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

The community as a whole and its members as individuals have consistently, by example, served to present a true, faithful and progressive face of Islam, its values and principles before people of all other faiths.

The Malak family had associations with the Indian freedom movement leaders like the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and with mystics like Avtaar Meher Baba, Sai Baba and Tajuddin Baba. Among the notable outsiders to have had association with the Institution and deeply influenced by it were the founder of the Indian National Congress, Dr Annie Beasant, the former Chief Justice and Vice President of India, Justice M.Hidayatullah, Swami Chinmayanand, Swami Avdeshanand, Islamic scholar Ali Miyan Nadvi and celebrities like the Celebrant Singers from USA, Indian film stars Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu, music legends Mohammed Rafi, Hemant Kumar, Talat Mehmood and Ghulam Ali, corporate leader Dr. Jamshed Irani, cricketing stars Capt. Mushtaque Ali, Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammed Azharuddin.

The community has produced great spiritual thinkers and religious philosophers, artists, educationists, poets, writers, scientists, doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs and sportspersons. Many of them have excelled at the national and international level. Yet, success in the material world is always considered ephemeral and the Atba-e-Malak Badar see themselves as perpetual seekers in the spiritual world. It is this collective mysticism that sets them apart.

The Journey

As per the religious beliefs and faith, they believe in Allah and his Messenger, Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) as the last prophet on the face of the Earth. It is their belief that there is, at all times, a Command of Allah called ‘Amar’ to carry on His spiritual mission on Earth. The ‘Amar’ is transmitted from predecessor to successor by appointment which is termed ‘Nuss’, and the person to whom the Amar is transmitted by Nuss alone can carry on the mission in his time.
